How to Beat the Heat in Warm Weather
As the warm weather approaches, temperatures are rising, and heatwaves are in the horizon.
We know that although the heat may feel good after a long winter, it is important to stay safe in the heat. Heat stroke, dehydration and heat exhaustion are serious conditions that should not be taken lightly during the summer months. We hope these tips will help you beat the heat this summer.
- If your home does not have air conditioning, make sure that you have the proper ventilation in place. Be sure that air can flow properly in and out of your home, avoiding any air flow restriction. If your home does not have air conditioning, it is advised that you buy a fan to keep the air moving in your home. Fans can provide some relief for an otherwise sweltering day.
- Air-conditioning may be your only relief, whether that is at home or elsewhere. If you are not inclined to install air conditioning in your home, seek out buildings that provide air-conditioning to its visitors. For example, maybe you can plan to go to a museum for a day in the summer. Not only will you enjoy the museum, but you will be in a building that provides air-conditioning and relief.
- Drink plenty of water. This is one of the most important aspects of staying healthy during the summer months. You should avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages, as they can often dehydrate you. Instead, you should fill up on water to avoid dehydration in the summer months. You may also drink Gatorade, Powerade or other drinks that have electrolytes in them, to avoid dehydration. You should drink one glass of water per hour, to make sure that you have plenty of fluids in your system.
- Prepare yourself to be outside! The summer brings heat, which can bring about fun outdoor activities! We know that picnics, BBQ’s and baseball games make the best memories, so why not prepare for those outings? Be sure to put on sunscreen, bring a hat, wear protective clothing and have plenty of fluids on hand. Enjoy the heat but do so in a responsible manner.
