How You Can Have Peace of Mind While Mom Ages at Home

As your parents age, you are likely to feel as though you must step in and take care of them.
This is a completely normal feeling, as it is natural to want to protect them and help them the best you can as they get older. There may be sleepless nights where you worry about whether to move your mother into a retirement community, despite her wishes to remain comfortably at home. Perhaps you are interested in keeping her home, but you and your siblings are unable to take care of her while maintaining your career and own families. This can be a very hard position to be in, especially because you want your mother to be in the best hands and as safe and happy as possible, with as little stress on you as possible.

The first thing is to know that there are options for your mother to be comfortable, happy and healthy, while you can get the peace of mind you deserve. We know that it can be difficult to talk to elderly parents about their future, but it is important to access your mother’s needs in this stage of her life. You could fill out a checklist for your aging parents and ask them to help you discover what they need the most. Is your mother looking for financial help? If so, try seeking out the help of a financial advisor that can help counsel where she should spend her money in order to set her up for the long term. Preparing a list of elderly financial planning questions gives you the chance to tackle her issues head on. If your mother is more in need of safety or personal help such as with bathing or cleaning up around her home, hiring an in-home caregiver may be the right solution for you and your family. The extra help around the home can do more than help with the daily tasks that your mother may not be able to do on her own, it may give her a better set up long term.

How Can a Caregiver Help with Your Mother?

Part of preparing for your mother’s future is assessing her immediate needs and how she can benefit from help around her home. Hiring an in-home caregiver can give your mother the help around the house that she needs, while gaining companionship that she may long for while her family is unable to help her during the day. Not only will a caregiver be there to make sure that she has someone to talk to, but he or she can help your mother communicate successfully with you through out the day, by providing an update to your family directly and with your mother as well. By hiring an in-home caregiver, you are giving your mother the tools that she needs in order to feel safe in her own home and to continue to age peacefully and comfortably in her home.

In addition to companionship, an in-home caregiver can help your mother with her meal preparation, giving you the assurance you need to know that she is eating properly through out the day. As your mother continues to age, nutrition is one of the most important aspects of her life, as it will help keep her healthy and strong for many years to come. Conversely, prescribed medications are just as important as proper nutrition, which can be difficult for individuals to remember when they may be experience memory loss. If your mother needs help with medication reminders, an in-home caregiver can help remind her when to take her medicine and in what dosage, to make sure that she is complying by her primary care physicians’ orders and care plan.

In addition to making sure your mother is abiding by her prescribed medication and nutrition plan, it is important to make sure that she is safe in her home. By utilizing a caregiver for light housekeeping, you can confirm that your mother has a clean home that will not cause her to suffer a fall or give her any issues due to clutter or an impure environment. An in-home caregiver will do the dishes, laundry, pick up any clutter and maintain a comfortable level of cleanliness that will leave you with a sense of ease when you see the environment your mother lives in.

Lastly, one of the most common worries that children may have is whether their mother is taking care of herself or not. With the help of a caregiver, you no longer have to worry about whether your mother’s hygiene is up to par or not. Personal care assistance through a home care agency can give you the peace of mind that you deserve while she received help with bathing, using the restroom, hygienic tasks and dressing/grooming!

How to Know if Home Care is the Right Option

Often times people assume that once an individual grows to hit 65 years of age or older, he or she should be put into a nursing home, an elderly living community or assisted living. Although those options may be best for some people, it may not be the right fit for all elderly individuals. Home care is a viable option for individuals that may want to maintain their freedom, stay in the comfort of their own home but gain assistance when they need it the most.

Home care can allow your mother to feel as though she is still in control in her own home, but with the assistance and guidance of a highly-skilled and trained caregiver. As her loved one, we know that it can be stressful for you to have to move your mother into a new home, sell her home and to go through her belongings, ripping away memories that once belonged to her home. With the help of a caregiver, you can be in control of what services she receives, without the headache of moving or the agony of having to get rid of some of your mother’s belongings. Home care will not only give you the peace of mind that a skilled nursing facility or retirement community would, but it gives you the peace of mind that your mother is in an environment that is conducive to a happy and healthy mindset, heart and emotional state.

Pros: It’s nice working here. With this agency, you have a very flexible schedule. There are a lot of 4-5 hour shifts, although they do offer overnight shifts as well from 8 hours, maybe 12. You can qualify for employee benefits after 1 year of working here. They have “emergency rate” wages as well, these are last minute shifts that can raise from $1-5 an hour; if they hired you at $14hr and they give you an (e-rate) emergency rate then it’ll probably be from $15, $16, $17+ depending on the case. Traveling is required and they did have a virtual interview with me. They have employees working 24 hours if you decide to call them. They use the CC-Go app to clock in and clock out. They also give you a link to a corporate perks website that will give you discounts on phones, plane tickets, hotels ect. Cons: Communication with the office/managers can be difficult at times because when you call, anyone/random person can answer. My personal recommendation as a company request for employee(s): Sending each caregiver a “care package” in a ziplock bag with gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, ect. in case a facility or client doesn’t have the supplies needed. Having these “care packages” would help the company prevent any further sicknesses when dealing with urination and bowel movements if anything were to happen.
