How to Protect Yourself from the Sun

The sun is magnificent, beautiful and powerful. It is responsible for giving us light during the day and providing a beautiful and captivating sunset at dusk. However, the sun can also contains ultraviolet radiation, which can raise a lot of health concerns if you do not protect yourself. Remember these tips when you are enjoying the beautiful sunshine.

  • Remember to wear a hat when you are outside to avoid direct contact with the sun for both your skin and your eyes. Looking directly at the sun will cause damage to your eyes, so in addition to wearing sunglasses, a hat may block out the sunlight. Additionally, a hat will give you the protection your face needs from the sun when you are enjoying the outdoors.
  • Cover up when you are going to be in the sun for extended periods of time. Wearing proper clothing that helps block out the light can prevent the light from damaging your skin through your clothes. If you are going to be in the sun in a bathing suit, remember to cover up when you are able to do so, to prevent unnecessary and prolonged sun exposure.
  • Sunscreen should always be worn when you are exposed to UV rays. Putting sunscreen on should become a part of your daily ‘getting ready routine’ so that you always have protection. It is advised that you put on sunscreen with at least 15 SPF.
  • Don’t lounge outside in the sun if you don’t have to. Often times, people will lay on the beach for hours on end in the sun. While that may feel relaxing and temporarily feels good on your skin, the long lasting damage the sun has on your skin is not worth it. It is advised that you limit your exposure to UV rays when you are not required to be outdoors and in the direct path of the sun.

We know that the sun is beautiful and can provide you with warmth, but the damaging effects it leaves on your skin should not be forgotten. We hope that these tips will help you protect yourself from the sun. As you age, it is more important than ever to take care of yourself, including your skin. Happy Summer!
