How to Help Your Aging Loved One with Spring Cleaning

How to Help Your Aging Loved One with Spring Cleaning

Spring is here and that means we will have warmer weather/sunshine and the opportunity to clean our whole house. The latter may give you anxiety and you may be worried for your aging loved one, as they are not able to clean their house the way they used to. We know that a clean house transpires into a happy homeowner and a healthier life, so we put together a list of how you can help your aging loved one with their spring cleaning!

  • Clean their gutters! Through out the winter, debris likely was collected in their gutters. You can grab a ladder, a hose and gloves and clean their gutters out to make sure that the debris does not overflow or cause the gutter to give out.
  • Scrub the floors! Through out the winter, you or your loved one probably swept or vacuumed, but did you scrub? Scrubbing the floors may seem like a daunting task, but there is a lot of dirt and germs that are lurking on your loved ones floors from the winter. Be safe and get scrubbing!
  • Replace all of the filters in their home. Water filters and air filters are likely ready to be changed! Try to replace these filters every three to six months to avoid your loved one from either breathing or drinking unfiltered air or water!
  • Test all smoke alarms! This task should be done every month, to keep your loved one safe, however spring cleaning is the perfect chance to test them one more time! Make sure that the batteries are working and if they need to be replaced, do so as soon as possible!
  • Make sure there are clear paths for your loved one to move around. It is a perfect time to make sure that the paths your loved one takes to walk around or in/out of their home is clear, safe and presents no immediate danger to them. Make sure there is nothing on the ground that can trip them, such as cords or rugs. You may also want to install a guard rail in their entrance if they have steps.
  • Prepare the outdoor area for use. Now that the weather is going to be warmer, your loved one may want to enjoy afternoons on the patio or their morning coffee on the porch. Be sure to clean off all outside furniture so that it is ready for use through out the spring.

We know that spring cleaning may sound daunting, but we think that it is an important time to make sure your loved one is safe in their own home. Cleaning allows you to check in on their well-being, provide help to them to keep them safe and to do a favor for your loved one! Happy Spring!

I like working for 24hr home care because they allow me to have a flexible schedule and I can take advantage of how far away from home I'd like to travel for work.

Pros: It’s nice working here. With this agency, you have a very flexible schedule. There are a lot of 4-5 hour shifts, although they do offer overnight shifts as well from 8 hours, maybe 12. You can qualify for employee benefits after 1 year of working here. They have “emergency rate” wages as well, these are last minute shifts that can raise from $1-5 an hour; if they hired you at $14hr and they give you an (e-rate) emergency rate then it’ll probably be from $15, $16, $17+ depending on the case. Traveling is required and they did have a virtual interview with me. They have employees working 24 hours if you decide to call them. They use the CC-Go app to clock in and clock out. They also give you a link to a corporate perks website that will give you discounts on phones, plane tickets, hotels ect. Cons: Communication with the office/managers can be difficult at times because when you call, anyone/random person can answer. My personal recommendation as a company request for employee(s): Sending each caregiver a “care package” in a ziplock bag with gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, ect. in case a facility or client doesn’t have the supplies needed. Having these “care packages” would help the company prevent any further sicknesses when dealing with urination and bowel movements if anything were to happen.
