How to Beat the Heat This Summer

As the summer approaches, temperatures are rising, and heatwaves are in the horizon. Unfortunately, for seniors, this means that danger is ahead, as they are more prone to experiencing heat related illnesses. Summertime brings a new set of dangers for people over the age of 65 and extra precautions will need to be taken in order to prevent heat-related health issues. Such issues include heat stroke, dehydration and heat exhaustion, all of which are serious conditions that should not be taken lightly during the summer months.

Before the summertime brings extreme temperatures and the dangers that come along with it, it is important for all seniors to visit their medical professionals for an annual wellness visit. During this time, we encourage all seniors or their loved ones to ask them about summertime risks and if the medical professional has any specific instructions in order to stay cool and safe. There are also general guidelines that we encourage elderly individuals to follow in order to stay cool in the heat of the summer.

  • If your home does not have air conditioning, make sure that you have the proper ventilation in place. Be sure that air can flow properly in and out of your home, avoiding any air flow restriction. If the summer air is cool enough at night to permit open windows, we suggest only opening them when the senior is relaxing in their home and awake. If your home does not have air conditioning and opening the windows at night is not an option, it is advised that you buy a fan to keep the air moving in the home. It is imperative that there is sufficient airflow in the rooms that the senior spends most of their time in, such as their bedroom. If there is a portable fan available to the senior, it is important that they do not attempt to move that portal fan from room to room.
  • Air-conditioning may be your only relief, whether that is at home or elsewhere. If you are not inclined to install air conditioning in your home, seek out buildings that provide air-conditioning to its visitors. For example, maybe you can plan to go to a museum for a day in the summer. Not only will you enjoy the museum, but you will be in a building that provides air-conditioning and relief. During the summer, if you or your loved one would like to seek out public places that have air-conditioning, an in-home caregiver can accompany you or your family to those places! During the summer months, it is imperative to have someone with you or your loved ones, as heat related illnesses soar during this time. Not only will a caregiver be able to help assist you to the public places that have air-conditioning, but they will also ensure that you are safe during your time in the heat as well.
  • Drink plenty of water. This is one of the most important aspects of staying healthy during the summer months. You should avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages, as they can often dehydrate you even more, especially in the heat. Instead, we encourage you and your family to drink water throughout the summer months to rehydrate and replenish. You may also drink Gatorade, Powerade or other drinks that have electrolytes in them, to avoid dehydration. You should drink one glass of water per hour, to make sure that you have plenty of fluids in your system. There are several types of water bottles available for purchase that will keep your fluids cold during the warm summer months. We encourage you to take the time to fill up the bottle before you leave the house in the morning and continuously refill it as needed.
  • Prepare yourself to be outside! As you know, the summer brings heat, which can bring about fun outdoor activities! We know that picnics, BBQ’s and baseball games make the best memories, especially in the summer! Simply preparing for these activities can allow you to enjoy them while staying safe and protecting yourself against heat related illnesses. Be sure to put on sunscreen, bring a hat, wear protective clothing and as aforementioned, have plenty of fluids on hand. Many seniors tend to forget these small yet important details when they are heading out for the day, which can lead to heat stroke, sunburns or dehydration. By hiring an in-home caregiver to help maintain a healthy summertime routine, you and your family can be assured that the appropriate measures are being taken before you or your loved ones are heading into the heat!

We encourage you and your family to take the necessary steps needed in order to stay safe this summertime. During these months, the sunshine is abundant, and the weather is gorgeous, but can often be dangerous. During the warmer months of the year, taking a few moments to prepare or simply plan out your day can save you from heat stroke or heat related illnesses that will ruin your summer! We hope that you enjoy your summer and the warmer weather. These tips will help you enjoy the summer in a healthy and safe manner. Happy Summer!

Pros: It’s nice working here. With this agency, you have a very flexible schedule. There are a lot of 4-5 hour shifts, although they do offer overnight shifts as well from 8 hours, maybe 12. You can qualify for employee benefits after 1 year of working here. They have “emergency rate” wages as well, these are last minute shifts that can raise from $1-5 an hour; if they hired you at $14hr and they give you an (e-rate) emergency rate then it’ll probably be from $15, $16, $17+ depending on the case. Traveling is required and they did have a virtual interview with me. They have employees working 24 hours if you decide to call them. They use the CC-Go app to clock in and clock out. They also give you a link to a corporate perks website that will give you discounts on phones, plane tickets, hotels ect. Cons: Communication with the office/managers can be difficult at times because when you call, anyone/random person can answer. My personal recommendation as a company request for employee(s): Sending each caregiver a “care package” in a ziplock bag with gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, ect. in case a facility or client doesn’t have the supplies needed. Having these “care packages” would help the company prevent any further sicknesses when dealing with urination and bowel movements if anything were to happen.
